Careers Roadshow 2024

Te Tara o Te Whai recently attended the 2024 Careers Roadshow during its final leg in Thames.

Thames-Coromandel District Council facilitated the 2024 Careers Roadshow, held over a week at five secondary schools around Pare Hauraki. The goal was to provide rangatahi with career information and opportunities in their senior year.

Many rangatahi engaged with the team at the roadshow and shared kōrero on the difficulties they experience when choosing a profession in health.

The following insights were captured from rangatahi:

Promotion of Health

  • Promotion of health and well-being services needs to happen in schools through wānanga/presentation. Explain what it means to work in the health industry.
  • Promote the benefits of working in health.
  • Promotion of Rongoa and Rongoa wānanga.

Myths around health

  • Find ways to inspire those who “don’t feel worthy” to pursue a career in health.
  • Remove the stigma that you have to be at the top of the class to work in Hauora.

Barriers for rangatahi wanting to pursue a career in health

  • Rangatahi are experiencing a lack of support either in school or at home.
  • Finding NCEA to be a lot of pressure.
  • There are not enough practical learning opportunities available for rangatahi to give it a go.
