Waihī Community Wānanga

Te Tara o Te Whai hosted their first community wānanga in Waihī on October 28th.

This was an opportunity to share about the localities' journey so far and why whānau voice is important to capture. The wānanga alternatively provides a space for whānau to kōrero openly about healthcare and the well-being services they would like to see improved.

The team would like to thank the principal of Waihī East School, Briar Scott, for allowing Te Tara o Te Whai to utilise the school hall to host the wānanga.

The following are insights gathered from the wānanga:

Access to GP services

  • Long wait times.
  • There is a need for more promotion of GP services in Waihī through social media.
  • Whānau who try to access these services out of hours experience confusing messages on what to do next.

Consistent Mobile Unit Visits

  • Making sure that regular mobile services are consistent with the locations and expectations of whānau and communities.

Dental Care

  • Dental care is very expensive, and wait times are long.
